The project folder is used to contain the users source folder, and any vendor generated files/folders that are necessary for simulation and synthesis. For documentation purposes, the project folder is named example_project. It is recommended that any application module .vhd files are placed in a folder named source that lies within the project folder. Doing so will help keep the directory clean and also allows the user to easily delete any vendor generated files/folders if (and when) the synthesized project becomes corrupt.
